Data Backup and System Recovery suggestions

It is important to understand that Computer Hard Drives serve you well if they last 5 years. Some have a one year warranty, some have a three year warranty. Seagate recently started offering 5 year warranty. (I don't know if that is anything more than a marketing move.)

Consider the following precious items: spacer spacer spacer
  • Financial Records
  • Digital Photos
  • Address Book
  • Documents
  • Spread sheets
  • Application Profiles
  • Favorites
  • email
  • Bookmarks
  • downloads

Warning: If you have only one or a few viruses, trojans or spyware on your machine, you won't know it.  Your backups will contain those demons.  Get them removed first!

Products I like:

"Microsoft "Windows Live OneCare" is a package of 4 applications:

  • 1) Anti-spy,
  • 2) Anti-virus,
  • 3) Improved Firewall,
  • 4) Personal Backup.

It is the only package I know of that also includes Backup.  There are many other standalone backup programs that are quite outstanding (if I can believe their marketing).

Install a USB2 Hard drive:
or...
Get your own USB External Hard drive. Although Live OneCare will back up to DVD, that is not the best solution for most people.
Internal Hard drive (for those with systems older than 2003)
Several advantages exist for this method:
  • you can install a second bootable copy of your Windows system.
  • Slight performance advantage in backups.
  • Takes up a lot less space (Hardware restrictions apply).
  • Slightly cheaper, but less flexible.

If you are a more technical user, there are other options.
